Five Daily Habits For Better Vision

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Gunnar Storms Bad vision habits are a major factor in the poor eyesight of the more than 150 million Americans who currently wear glasses or contacts. Most of these Americans go through the entire day doing things that are detrimental to their vision, such as reading magazines and books, watching tv for long periods, avoiding sunlight, and the major culprit of staring at a computer screen for hours at a time. And to make matters worse they usually do nothing when it comes to improving their vision or even maintaining their current eyesight. Instead they usually resort to glasses and contacts which actually weaken your eyes since you’re not using them and exercising them. The result is declining vision and the need for a stronger prescription and thicker lenses year after year. Fortunately there are ways you can incorporate vision improvement into your daily life. Here’s a few that you can probably start doing right now: 1. When reading books, newspapers, or magazines, try to hold it at a distance and find a length where you can read the letters but you really have to focus. Doing this for a long time may give you a headache so I only recommend doing it for a few minutes anytime you are reading. If done on a regular basis you will start to notice that you will be able to hold it at a further distance and still read the words. Keep holding it at a further length to continue to improve your vision. 2. In the morning, splash warm water then cold water 20 times each over your closed eyes. In the evening before going to bed, splash your eyes 20 times with cold water then warm water. This relaxes the eyes and improves circulation. I notice that my vision is usually a little clearer immediately after doing this. Another method is to take two containers, fill one with warm water, the other with cold water. Place a cloth in each one and let them soak. Tilt your head back or lay down and place the wet cloth over your closed eyes. Alternate between the warm and cold cloths. 3. If you take a bus or train route or are a passenger in a car use this opportunity to look out the window and focus on objects in the distance. This is especially good since the objects are moving and changing quickly. While focusing on an object, try to really focus on the details. For example if you’re looking at a tree, try to really focus on the individual leaves. You can practice near/far focusing by focusing on an object in the distance such as a house and then quickly looking at something in front of you such as a scratch on the window. If you are driving, try using the few seconds stopped at a red light to focus on something in the far distance. 4. If you’re like an increasing number of Americans, myself included, you spend a significant amount of time every day sitting behind the computer. This can be extremely detrimental to your vision since you’re staring at something inches away from your face for hours at a time, and also causes eyestrain. However it doesn’t have to be. When sitting on the computer simply take a few seconds every 10 minutes or so to take your eyes off the monitor and stare at an object in the distance. This can reduce eyestrain and fatigue. I would also suggest taking a few minutes to have a palming and eye rotation session every half hour or so. 5. Another major culprit of declining vision is wearing sunglasses. Although this may sound ironic since many people wearsunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun the truth is that proper amounts of sunlight are a necessity for healthy vision. Many Americans go through the entire day without exposing their eyes to the circulation and nutrients that sunlight provides by staying inside all day at work, at home behind the tv or the computer, and wearing sunglasses to shield their eyes when even they do go outside. You shouldn’t expect to get 20/20 vision solely from doing these exercises, especially if your eyesight is currently very poor. However, they certainly do help, and at the very least will help maintain your current level of vision. If you’re really serious about freeing yourself from glasses, then you also need to know the exercises and techniques that will successfully improve your vision. You also need to be aware of proper nutrition and diet, which is also an important part in maintaining good eyesight. Planning the Menu for Your Wedding Reception

Friday, September 14th, 2007

By Mia LeCron When you are planning a budgeted menu, you must first know what your exact budget is when it comes to the food and drink specifically. Some people keep the food and drinks separate, but on average, the food and drink are a part of the same bill. If you can afford the more expensive catering services, then by all means enjoy. However, if you are like most of us, you will likely need a little bit of help in creating a menu that is fitting to your budget. If you are hosting an indoor reception in a hall and plan to have a dinner option, you have to make sure that you accommodate the needs of all of your guests which include vegetarians. You should request that the guests RSVP beforehand so that you can get the right amount of vegetarian plates. The way that you choose to serve the dinners can vary. Here are some tips on how you can choose to serve the guests to make it a bit cheaper for you. You can serve the meals buffet style, with this option you have people forego wedding gifts in favor of bringing a dish You can offer vegetable, fruit an meat platters with dips and crackers instead of foods You can ask each guest to contribute a small amount of money to the reception or to make donations toward the reception rather than buying a gift. You can offer a soup and salad menu rather than a full blown entre Offer a limited bar which means that you offer an open bar only at certain times such as after dinner and during toasting etc. that way your guests arent paying and you wont go broke, the rest of the time offer a cash bar Offer around the world appetizers instead of a meal. This will give you the opportunity to offer fill ups such as crab, shrimp. Etc. as well as casual appetizers like cheese sticks, chicken wings, and mushroom caps etc. the around the world motif will also provide your party with a variety of different tastes. Request that each immediate family member create a dish instead of a present Do not pay for extras like servers, bartenders etc. asking a friend or family member to do it instead as a wedding gift to you Outdoor receptions give you much freedom when choosing your menu because you can serve anything that you want including barbecue, long group submarine sandwiches or pizza. As long as you offer foods that will accommodate both carnivores and vegetarians, you will be fine. You can always find items to suit all of your needs and every budget as long as your budget is reasonable for the amount of people that you are planning to serve. If it doesnt fit, you may have to trim the invite list. How to Say Goodbye to a Gal

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

By Bernadette Sukley Its going to be the toughest night of your life. But if you do it right, itll be a clean break and itll be over quickly. Sure theres going to be a little pain, but as long as youre prepared you can deliver the hurt softly. Here are some Dos and Donts for calling it quits. Do not break up over the cell phone. Bad move. It smacks of insensitivity and you will develop an ugly reputation. And never be able to date in your area again. Unless you are really hot or rich or both. Do watch Oprah. Okay, this can be a secret peek at the Queen of Daytime TV. But guys, youll have to adopt womanspeak. This means saying words and phrases that will allow you to communicate effectively to the woman that the relationship is over. Say stuff like: Im in a different place now, I wish you well in your journey, You will always have a special place in my heart, or Ive learned so much from this relationship. Hint: Must be said without throwing up or laughing. Do not celebrate with your buddies once the deed is done. Chances are shell be at the same bar with her friends. She will hate you. They will hate you. You will hate yourself. Do it alone. If shes the emotional sort, perform the break up in her apartment or secluded place where the two of you will be alone. That way you can avoid the stares that say: You loser! which will most certainly be fired at you in a public place where other women might be present. Do not date her girlfriend. Testing the loyalty of girlfriends is just fodder for a huge warplacing you squarely in the middle. Think Switzerland, be neutral, lay low until the dust has settled. And then test the waters with a hows she doing? phone call to her friend. Do tell her why. Be honest and specific. Politics, religion and/or weird family are often issues that are left unresolved until after the couple marries. (And you wonder why the divorce rate is so high.) Its these differences that will rear their ugly head causing rifts that you need to point out. Tell her why you dont want to argue any more. Do not fall prey to tears. Guys, its the oldest trick in the book, though a few tears are acceptable. For manipulative women its the wailing act that precedes the guilt trip. If your conversations are dominated by the you dont (fill in the blank) me enough then you need to bail. A woman like that is only happy when she has the man on a leash. Look up the word uxorious and vow never to become that way. Bernadette Sukley is a freelance writer with an eye towards the quirky. Guaifenesin: The Answer To Fibromyalgia?

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Lee_Dobbins] Lee Dobbins There’s been a lot of buzz about guaifenesin (pronounced ‘gwhy-FEH-neh-sin’) in treating fibromyalgia syndrome or FMS. Much of this interest was generated by Dr. R. Paul St. Amand who claims to have successfully treated the disorder using guaifenesin. He believes that since FMS is caused by an irregularity in the excretion of phosphates from the body, it is only logical that phosphates be removed in order to bring about pain relief. In his studies with patients taking guaifenesin, Dr. St. Amand found that phosphate excretion increased by 60%. There was also a 30% increase in the excretion of calcium and oxalates. The amount of calcium in the body is directly proportional to the amount of phosphates. If phosphates increase, so will calcium. Dr. St. Amand began as a technical advisor to a study involving guaifenesin in the 1990s, with Dr. Robert Bennett heading it. Dr. Bennett is one of the acknowledged experts in the study of fibromyalgia. The two doctors disagreed on the effects of guaifenesin based on the results, with Dr. Bennett stating that guaifenesin successfully effected a cure because of the placebo effect and nothing else. What is guaifenesin? Guaifenesin first made its appearance as early as 1530 as guaiacum, an extract from the bark of the guaiac tree. It was first used to treat back pain related to syphilis and was soon used to treat rheumatism, a proof of its analgesic effect. In the 1980s, a synthetic form was born, an eponymous medicine made available as tablets. Guaifenesin is also an active ingredient in medicines for colds and cough and can be absorbed totally within two hours after ingesting. It is the ingredient responsible for loosening phlegm from the lungs so they can be coughed out. Guaifenesin is also known to have a musculoskeletal relaxant property, something that is often overlooked since it is not used for that purpose. It is better known as a main ingredient in cough and cold medicines. By itself, guaifenesin is used to treat numerous conditions involving pain like restless leg syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and pelvic pain. What does guaifenesin do to relieve FMS? While the cause of fibromyalgia remains unclear, it is believed (not established) that the culprit may be inorganic phosphates and calcium. Normally maintained to a good level by a healthy body, an abnormality in their excretion is believed to lead to fibromyalgia. Dr. St. Amand believes that it is the effect of guaifenesin in increasing phosphate excretion that eventually leads to the reversal of fibromyalgia. However, some experts believe that it is guaifenesin’s analgesic properties that actually relieve the pain associated with fibromyalgia. Is guaifenesin therapy right for you? First of all, treating fibromyalgia with guaifenesin is not as simple as popping it into your mouth twice or thrice daily. Guaifenesin is only given with a doctor’s prescription. You must have undergone a careful and complete medical exam to determine your history. Any swollen area must also be carefully noted or ‘mapped’. Then, a careful regimen of physical and dietary routines must be followed. The dosage is also started low in the beginning of treatment (usually 300mg 2x a day) and will be increased depending on your need and progress. Expect some reactions during the initial period of treatment, like fatigue or flu-like symptoms. Once a certain level of fibromyalgia reversal is achieved, dosage may be adjusted depending on the individual. Under no circumstances must you try to treat fibromyalgia with guaifenesin on your own. Guaifenesin is a very common medication and may be available over the counter. However, in most cases, it is combined with other ingredients in one medication and could have adverse effects on your health. Another important thing to remember is that salicylates must be avoided during treatment with guaifenesin. Usually found in herbs, herbal teas and drugs like aspirin, salicylates will prevent the body from excreting excess phosphates, making guaifenesin useless. Other common items like Listerine, Pepto-Bismol and Alka-Seltzer also contain salicylates. Again, guaifenesin therapy must only be undergone under a medical doctor’s prescription and monitoring. And even then, some people may not experience the desired results. As Dr. St. Amand himself admits, guaifenesin therapy is not for the ‘faint of heart’. Side effects Some side effects may occur, including hair loss, pimples, skin rashes and bad-smelling sweat. Urine will also be strong-smelling and dark-colored and vaginal secretions may become too acidic. Most patients also experience headaches and dizziness during the first cycle and some have experience high levels of liver enzyme. Internet Dating: 8 Simple and Effective Ways to Start

Monday, September 10th, 2007

By Dr. Jackie Black 1. The first thing to focus on is writing great profiles that do two things: Get you found and Get responses from people who are very close to your ideal match 2. Posting a photograph is the single most important factor for getting people to read your profile. Profiles with pictures are the first to be browsed. Post a current photograph. 3. A creative, catchy headline can separate you from the masses instantly. Be concise and to the point in the body of your profile. Keep the information simple and honest. Remember that you are trying to attract the kind of people you want to meet. Integrity is always better than stretching the truth. Let him or her know who you are from the get-go. Dont waste time with people who are looking for someone you are not! 4. Grammar and spelling are important. Write your profile as a WORD document, run a spell check and then cut and paste it into the profile text boxes. Use upper and lower case. 5. When you send an e-mail either initiating contact or responding, a subject heading that stands out is very helpful. The reader can get a first impression of you even before s/he gets to the body of your e-mail. Take advantage of this opportunity to put your true self out there. 6. Be timely. Answer the responses or initial e-mails within three four days. It is considered good etiquette to answer them all since people have taken the time and effort to communicate with you. If you become overwhelmed by the interest of many men or women, simply freeze your account until you can catch up and catch your breath. 7. Always be polite. Generally it is a good idea to avoid jokes and sarcasm. They often dont come across as they were intended. Resist embellishing or exaggerating who you are or anything about yourself. 8. Dont complain about the state of your life or bash your exes. Ask open-ended questions that invite the recipient to answer your questions with personal stories. It is safe to talk about interests, hobbies, traveling, books, movies or activities you like to do regularly. Thats how a conversation will start. Avoid heavy or highly charged political issues or issues related to religion, abortion or the death penalty. Keep your e-mails fun, positive and upbeat. Think about each e-mail as an opportunity to get to know another new person. Be curious and interested. Remember, only YOU can make it happen! Detox Programs

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

By Troy Francis Today there are several detox programs designed and suited for people with different lifestyles. Examples of these are herbal detoxification, detox baths in saunas, juice cleansing and more. Cases show that only some detox programs will be hard on the liver and the kidneys. The Juice Fasting Program- A good juice fasting detox program, will consist of fruits or vegetable juices. This has been the choice for years over water fasting, because juices have alkalizing and neutralize uric acid and other important nutritional substances that the body needs. They also contain Fruit and an adequate quantity of vitamins that are easier to digest. Herbal detoxification- This has been a big choice for many. It involves the use of several different herbs which can help with cleansing the body. Combined they have good results. Some are in the form of pills or power substances. You may also use some types of Herbal tea for a better detox program. Some studies have shown that dandelion root, red beets and cranberries work well with cleansing the kidneys. Saunas and steam baths- This type of detox program is widely used for cleansing the skin. This type of detox program will help with getting rid of the bodies surface pollutants that settle in the skin. Most spas have this type of treatment available. Try to keep in mind that there are many detox programs out their. You will have to decide on what one will work for you based on your health needs. At the end of a detox program, you may have some side effect such as fatigue and lethargy. You should also go back to your normal healthy diet after completing the detox program. Finally try to keep your sugars and processed foods to a minimum. This will help you achieve overall health and wellness. Troy Francis is author for exercise-diet.com you may view other articles like this by visiting our site. The Last Time I was Really Skinny

Friday, September 7th, 2007

By Ron McCluskey Quite a few years ago, my wife and I spent a year in southern Mexico. During that time we worked in a small hospital. We even lived in the hospital. The one thing that I didn’t enjoy was eating in the hospital cafeteria. You wouldn’t think of it as a cafeteria. There was not really a choice of what you had to eat. The typical breakfast was something called gorditas. These were made like a small tortilla with a thick edge. There was a little tomato sauce on them and some cream. There was usually a little fruit to go with them. For lunch we usually had a vegetable soup, some rice and a tortilla. The soup was sometimes flavored with a chicken foot. No lie! The supper was black beans, not even flavored with salt and more rice and tortillas. About the only variation was the type of fruit that was available. And that I enjoyed. In season, there was nothing as good as fresh mango, papaya and pineapples. One of the things I really enjoyed was one small type of banana called manzanita (little apple). These small thick bananas tasted about half way between a banana and an apple. One time I saw a man carrying a whole stalk of these bananas to town. He was about a mile from town when I met him on the trail. I asked if he was going to sell them. He told me that he wanted 15 pesos. That was about 2 dollars at the time. I was more than willing to buy the whole bunch. Despite the good fruit, we would get tired of the constant tortillas, bland black beans and rice. So, occasionally we would go to town and buy a jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread. That was the only food we could find that reminded us of home. As you can imagine, there were lots of times when we spent our free times talking about pizza, pie and ice cream. On top of all of that, the heat and humidity really messed with your appetite. There were times when you did not feel like eating at all. During that time, I weighed less than at any other time as an adult. There were several things that affected my weight loss during that time. 1) There was not a whole lot available to eat that we really enjoyed. 2) There was very little in the way of refined foods. 3) The heat decreased my appetite. 4) We mostly ate fruit as a treat. Because of my experience, I have several recommendations for you. 1) When you shop for groceries, spend more time in the fresh fruit section and less time in the bakery. 2) Don’t keep food around that you can eat right out of the package. Make yourself work a bit for it. 3) Don’t use as much air conditioning in the summer. It will decrease your appetite. But, be sure to drink enough water to keep up with your fluid loss. You can probably think of some other applications. But, if you can’t do it yourself, you could always sign up for a year of volunteer work in southern Mexico. Unique Wedding Ideas

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

By Yolanda Nash The most important day of your life should be one thats not only memorable, but one that is uniquely tailored to the two of you. With all of the little details to remember that come along with planning a wedding, its easy to lose sight of what the day really means; an expression and celebration of your love. For that reason its important to include a few personalized touches to your big day. - Include a get to know the wedding party section in your program for an excellent way for guests to learn how everyone in the bridal party is connected or how they actually know one another. - For guests that have traveled to the wedding from an out of town location, include a handwritten note of thanks on a postcard featuring the city where your wedding is taking place. This gives a simple but personal and heartfelt touch thats sure to become a treasured keepsake along with photos of the wedding. - Delicate, embroidered handkerchiefs or colored tissues placed in the rows or aisles where guests will be seated during the ceremony will be a welcome addition for the tears of joy that will be shed. - A handwritten note to your parents and future in-laws thats left on their seats prior to the ceremony will have them in tears before the festivities even begin! The short note can be an expression of thanks for all theyve done for the wedding or simply how you feel about them in general. - Pick a unique time for your ceremony to begin, such as 3:13, the same exact time he proposed. Or if the date of the proposal was, for example, April 19th, the start time could be 4:19 in honor of the special day that started it all. - Instead of having just the typical disposable cameras on each of your reception tables, include small photo albums, colorful blank note cards and pens as well. Also include a small sign on each of the tables letting guests know that they are welcome to write some words of wisdom or special thoughts for the bride and groom on the note cards. After the pictures are developed the cards can be matched with the photos of the author for an extra special keepsake of the wedding. - For a creative an unique way to tackle seating issues at the reception, consider assigning guests to tables based on their age. Tables could then be decorated with photos and memorabilia reminiscent of the age you or your fianc were based on the number. For instance, table 16 could feature photos of you and your first car or special memories from your Sweet 16 party and table 1 would include all of your baby pictures. - An area set aside just for the kids will be a welcome feature for everyone at the wedding, especially if there are parents in the bridal party. Include puzzles, crayons, paper, coloring books, and various games to keep the little ones busy. If an extra room is available, consider adding a television with videos and hiring a few teenage family members who will supervise the room in exchange for some extra spending money. Digital Signage Growth to Propel Marketers into Orbit

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

By David Little Imagine you were an astronaut aboard the International Space Station. On a clear day you look to the earth below at the exact moment your celestial home zips over Manhattan. As you gaze down at the New York City borough, you are stunned by what you see: an enormous sign covering about 75 percent of the landmass of the borough reading “Come Home Soon! We Miss You.” This out of this world scenario is exactly what would happen if it were magically possible to position the viewable area of all the flat panel displays produced in 2006 next to each other over the landmass of Manhattan. Incredibly, that translates into 16.8 square miles! The figure, part of the DisplaySearch’s Q4′06 issue of its “Quarterly Worldwide FPD Report,” underscores how dominant flat panel displays are becoming. According to DisplaySearch, the number of flat panel displays shipped was expected to rise 6 percent to 3.4 billion. (Remember, there are a lot of laptops, cell phones and other handheld devices that use LCD flat panel displays.) The report estimates that flat panel TVs accounted for 33 percent of all televisions sold in 2006. In this country, with the government mandate forcing set makers to include DTV tuners in their sets kicking in next month and the introduction of legislation in Congress mandating retailers, broadcasters, and cable and satellite operators take steps to educate consumers about the impending analog switchoff, the demand for flat panel TVs is only likely to accelerate further -especially given the falling price of these flat panel sets. In 2006, consumers got more display for their dollar, especially when it came to LCD sets. The price of a square meter of LCD display fell 32 percent year over year in the third quarter of 2006, according to the report. Not surprisingly, the amount of LCD viewing area shipped grew 54 percent in the same period. That helped to propel LCD to the lion’s share of the flat panel display market, accounting for nearly 86 percent of all flat panel viewing area shipped, said DisplaySearch. Plasmas accounted for 8.5 percent of total flat panel display area in the third quarter ‘06. Year over year, total plasma display area shipped grew 56 percent as of Q3 ‘06. The implications of the DisplaySearch statistics for those wishing to use flat panels to meet their digital signage display requirements are significant. For marketing departments needing to justify the expense of digital signage systems, falling prices should make the task a bit easier. More importantly from a strategic point of view, the rapid acceptance of flat panel displays by consumers means marketing messages played back on digital signage networks don’t look out of the ordinary. They fit into the video mainstream. To consumers, they look just like television, and after all in today’s world isn’t TV the arbiter of reality? The downside to the growing presence of flat panel sets in the homes of Americans is that the displays are becoming ever more familiar. Some of the mystique may soon begin to wear off. However, successful digital signage network operators, like their TV counterparts, know that ultimately content is king. As long as digital signage content compels its audience to stop, watch and take a desired action no amount of flat panel familiarity can stand in the way. Ultimately, it is compelling content on these increasingly ubiquitous flat panels that will help marketers and advertisers using digital signage to influence the public to take the actions they desire. Resulting sales should be out-of-this world. Fall Wedding Ideas

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

By Dennis Estrada The fall weddings captures the beautiful autumn or fall season. Mother Nature turns the color of the leaves from green to orange. The landscape and foliage add warm and rich color accents to the wedding. The red, orange, browns, and yellow are the color of the season. Using the color of season, you make a warm and fabulous wedding theme that matches the season. Think of oak, maple, aspen, pumpkin, lantern, fireplace, candle, wheat, corn, squash, potato, home-made craft, and fall leaves. The wedding flowers for the fall can be mums, daisies, roses, and sunflowers. Line up the flowers on the wedding aisle with lighted candles. It provides warm and cozy entrance for the groom, bride, and sponsors. An old orchards, 18th century churches, huge gardens, old barns, vineyards, and old castles that overlook the landscape are perfect for wedding. The wedding captures the romance from the majestic autumn landscape. In the summer, the summer heat may be too hot and uncomfortable for the bride and groom.
