I’ve never been able to figure out why someone would roll a lawn; in my household, a lawn is for rolling on, not for being rolled. Many local homeowners, no doubt hormonally unbalanced by the passing of winter, like to go out and drag a heavy weight around the lawn. I recently read one newsletter that said the reason for rolling was to make sure the grass roots were in contact with the soil. Right, and I’ve got a bridge I can sell you. Grass roots, if properly grown, are quite deep and no amount of frost is going to throw them out of contact with the soil. The only thing rolling a lawn accomplishes is to compact the soil. Rolling the lawn compacts the soil squashing all the soil particles together. This means that air spaces necessary for good root growth are eliminated. It also means that water can’t penetrate the soil because there are no holes for it to move into. The bulk of the water runs off the lawn and never penetrates deep into the soil to the root zone level. This run off water takes the dissolving plant food with it so the spring feeding is washed down the sewer. In one fell swoop, rolling a lawn eliminates the necessary aeration, prevents water from entering and assists in the removal of spring applied fertilizer. But here are some of the ones that most gardeners will come across at one time or another. Slugs - these slow moving slime buckets can do serious damage to both ornamental and vegetable plants. And since they’re nocturnal, you must creep about at night, flashlight in hand to catch them in the act. There are a number of effective methods and products that can be used against them. Here are some: Make a beer trap. Set a bowl or saucer in the ground with the lip just a little above the soil and fill with beer. Place them approximately every three feet in slug land. Slugs are attracted to the yeast, crawl in and drown. Clean out the trap in the morning and replenish the beer as needed. Sprinkle something with sharp edges around areas that slugs frequent. When they crawl across this barrier, they slice themselves and leak precious bodily fluids, which kills them. Diatomaceous earth, sharp sand, or crushed egg or oyster shells will do the trick. Iron phosphate baits that you sprinkle around your plants are an effective natural control. The slugs can’t resist eating it and once they do it stops the feeding urge so they die. Aphids - these small (less than 1/8 inch) insects can appear in great numbers on your garden plants in a hurry. Thankfully they are fairly easy to get rid of: all that’s required is a little diligence. You can remove them from plants with the spray from a hose that’s strong enough to knock them off but not forceful enough to damage plants. This harms their mouthparts so that they can’t feed. Ladybugs and their larvae love to eat aphids. They will soon appear after aphids do. If you need more you can order them by mail. And you can use insecticidal soaps to kill aphids as well. Also you can come out at night and collect them by hand and drop them into soapy water. And you can spread and sprinkle eggshells around areas cutworms are known to frequent. Cucumber beetles - these green spotted or yellow striped beetles can cause serious damage to members of the cucurbit family because they transmit the disease bacterial wilt. Cucurbits include cucumbers, melons and squash. Feeding adult beetles spread the disease and once it’s infected, there’s nothing one can do. Eventually the entire plant dies. The best control against cucumber beetles is to use row covers to prevent contact with plants. You can also hand pick them when you see them, but they move pretty fast and anyway, by then it may be too late. Some have success using a Dustbuster type hand-vac to remove them. You can also try yellow sticky traps, which they are attracted to and which will trap them. Thrips - these tiny, 1/20″ bugs are small in size but big in terms of the damage they cause. They damage a plant by sucking the juices from them, which affects plant growth and the formation of foliage and flowers. They tend to feed in unexposed areas so they are sometimes difficult to get at. They also transmit these two diseases for which there are no controls: impatiens necrotic spot virus and tomato spotted wilt virus. They are not easy to control but if you find them you can try these steps: - Use a strong jet of water to knock them from the plant. - Get rid of those plant sections and flowers that have been affected. - Mulches made of aluminum foil have been shown in some cases to be effective. - Use overhead watering which can kill them. - Insecticidal soaps are effective if you can reach the thrips. - And of course there are always natural predators such as lady beetles, lacewings and mantids. By Mary Gardner My son Jeremy will almost be six years old next week. For the first 5 years of his life, putting his shoes and socks and clothes on was a struggle. It isnt anymore. Weve come across a miracle cure!!! Jeremy was diagnosed this past year with Sensory Integration Disorder. He started having problems in school and so we were referred to a place called Lifeskills, in Winter Park, FL. They work with many kids with challenges and specialize in Sensory issues. The problems we encountered at home were on a daily basis. Getting him out of bed was a struggle, finding the right breakfast and ultimately, we dreaded getting him dressed every day. Socks and shoes were constantly being pulled off and tossed. Clothes were never soft enough and the tags all had to go. I spent hundreds of dollars finding clothes and shoes that hed keep on his body. Once, Jeremy struggled so hard with pulling off his coat, he slipped and fell, and bumped his head on a chair. That little incident cost him 15 stitches in his head. When we entered therapy we outlined the laundry list of issues Jeremy had. The big one for us was getting him dressed. Once the therapist gave us the occupational therapy brush and showed us how to brush his arms and legs up and down and his feet, and then to do joint compressions. This brushing is actually a deep pressure massage with a surgical brush and is followed by joint compressions. An occupational therapist can train you once and youll use it at home. (You can find an OT by going through the school counselor or through your family doctor). It was only 2 -3 of days of brushing Jeremy a few times a day before Jeremy was able to adjust quickly to his shoes when we put them on in the morning. Its been like a miracle! Jeremy can now wear clothes and will put on socks and keep them there! He still prefers silky clothes like football jerseys but he will put on socks now and not scream and cry. Before we learned of this type of massage it must have felt like he was putting a wool sweater on during the middle of August. Learning this technique and others at occupational therapy has been a God send in our lives. We used to dread every morning getting Jeremy up and ready for school. We were late nearly every day depending upon what clothes I could find that would feel comfortable. We still struggle occasionally getting him out of bed, but from what I understand, THAT could be a struggle well into his teen years. Now all you need are some small split shot sinkers. Now you place the split shot on your line with the barrel swivel as a stopper, if you will. The goal here is to add enough split shot to get your offering to bounce off the bottom as it flows downstream. My mentor used to say, “If you’re not getting snagged, you’re not fishing in the right place”. This can get frustrating in the beginning, as getting snagged can be common until you get the number of split shot right. But don’t be disheartened, because this is an incredibly effective way to catch fish. The two major factors to take into account when using gang hooks the traditional way are as follows: The Wind - In most cases, the more wind, the more weight you will need. The Flow - This is obvious as well. The heavier the flow the more weight that will be needed. That’s how the gang hook is traditionally used. This setup is as simple as it gets.
