Wedding Flowers - What Every Bride Should Know before Her Big Day

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Jean Bachcroft Whether your wedding will be coming up roses, daffodils, or something else, choosing the wrong flowers for that blissful day can create a scene youll want to soon forget. But armed with a few basics about flowers, the arrangements you choose will land you a bevy of compliments and queries. When selecting your wedding flowers, the single most important thing to keep in mind is that all flowers have distinct characteristics. Knowing what the characteristics are of the flowers youll be choosing can mean the difference between crying because youre exchanging vows with the man of your dreams and tearing up thanks to an allergic reaction to the pollen in some of those beautiful flowers in your wedding bouquet. To avoid sniffles and sneezes at the alter, know which blooms might cause you trouble. And ask each person in your wedding party which blooms they are allergic to before ordering bouquets. Topping the list of highly allergenic blossoms are lilies and gardenias. If you are planning a warm-weather wedding, be sure to stick with flowers that can withstand heat and high humidity. Delicate flowers, like hydrangeas, are likely to wilt and sag in warm weather. Choose hardier flowers, such as orchids, roses, or herbs. The fragrance from flowers will be stronger during warm weather, therefore take this into consideration when making your selections. You will want your guests to feel as if theyve just walked into a flower garden, not a perfume factory. When planning a summer wedding that will take place in a small, completely enclosed room, choose less-fragrant flowers such as orchids or asters. Freesia, tuberose, and gardenias should be avoided. Want to take your guests breath away (figuratively speaking, that is)? Near the entrance to the reception area, be sure to have lovely floral centerpieces, or perhaps candles, at eye level. Stringing garlands, ribbons, or some other kind of delicate ornaments above windows or doorways will also add to the effect. Winter brides should consult a florist before settling on a particular arrangement. Below 42 degrees, some flowers may turn black. This doesnt necessarily mean that those flowers must be excluded from your bouquet, but it does mean that they shouldnt be taken along for an outdoor photo shoot. Lilies will help you to put on a stunning show, but before you carry them next to your dress, be sure to have your florist remove the stamens. Left intact, theyll stain your dress with bright yellow pollen. Although charming to look at, some field flowers are best left out in nature. Once they are cut, mostpoppies and bluebells, for examplewill droop and wilt before you get to the altar. Notable exceptions to this general rule include asters, sweet peas, and daisies. Flowers are sensitive to cigarette smoke. So, if you dont want your bouquet to turn colors or wilt, ask your guests to smoke outside. Some popular wedding flowers, such as euphorbia and daffodils, are hollow-stemmed, so their sap can drip onto your lovely gown. If you choose one of these varieties for your bouquet, have your florist completely wrap the stems. Many couples begin greeting their guests well before the ceremony is scheduled to begin. If this is your plan, the grooms boutonniere may be completely flattened by the time he has finished hugging and kissing his and your relatives and friends. Consider ordering a second boutonniere, which will be fresh for the ceremony and the photo session. Dont allow your centerpieces to hinder conversation between guest. Centerpieces should always be either high or low, never in between, forcing your guests to crane their necks to speak to someone on the other side of the table. Here are a few final points to keep in mind: Know in advance where everything is supposed to take place. In fact, its a good idea to write down the schedule of where everyone should be and when. Give a copy to your mom or dad, the maid-of-honor, your caterer, and your florist. Giving a copy of the schedule to the florist will help to ensure that the right floral arrangements arrive at the right location on time. Reusing the floral arrangements from the ceremony for the reception areas will help to keep down costs. As long as youve planned in advance by making sure that the color schemes blend, there is no reason not to recycle wedding flowers. Student Safety Tips

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Frank G Getting an education theses days is tuff enough. Between paying tuition, bills, school supplies and hours of studying, students have to watch out for their safety as well! Students cant count on campus security as they never seem to be around when needed, they just cant be expected to watch over so many students and guarantee everyones safety. If you live on campus, be careful who you let in your dorm. Be very weary of strangers or people you just met. Many can seem very nice and sweet but yet have alternative motives. Also be very careful of who follows you into the building. If you are walking alone many will take this chance to follow you into your dorm, so be very aware of your surroundings. Lock your bedroom door even if you are only going into your hallway. Did you know about half of all burglaries happen because a door or windows are left open? If you’re in a private home or apartment make sure all the windows are locked down and the front door is always locked. It doesnt matter if youre only going to be out a few minutes out or close by. Always lock up! You never know who might be watching! Muggers, burglars and rapists are always looking for an easy target. You dont want to be one of them, always try to be in groups at night. If you cant be with friends going home, youre probably better off getting a taxi or staying over a friends home. When using ATM machines try to be in a group of friends or trusted people. If you can, any time you need to use ATMS try to get your cash early on. The early the better, less chance of getting cornered and robbed in the dark of night. So its best to use ATMS in groups and during the day if possible. Put your debit card and cash away quickly and always be aware of who’s around you and your surroundings. Needles to say never give anybody your pin number or write it down where someone can take it. Everyone is more vulnerable to crime or being abused in some sort or manner, when they’ve been drinking. If you’re planning a big night out partying, arrange beforehand a way to get home safely, with friends, or in a taxi. Be careful of whom you accept drinks from, men and women can have their drinks spiked for different reasons. Keep an eye on your drink as much as possible with strangers. I am not saying you have to be paranoid or anything like that; just use common sense and all should be well. Pubic Hair Removal - Tips When Shaving

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Mike Jones Never use the old-fashioned switch-blade razor. It is quite unsuitable for pubic hair removal and can be dangerous. Choose a female razor, obtainable from Wilkinson Sword or other well known razor manufacturers, rather than an ordinary safety razor. The design makes it much more difficult to cut yourself. Opt for a more expensive good quality razor rather than a cheap throw away which is more likely to cause nicks, soreness and razor burns in this sensitive area. If the pubic hair is thick and long use small scissors to trim down the hair to about a quarter of an inch. This will avoid blunting and clogging the razor too quickly. Wet a large, washcloth and lay it over the entire pubic area for two or three minutes. Alternatively, take a long hot bath or stay in the shower for a while making sure the pubic area receives a lot of water. Pubic hair is coarser than head hair and needs more time to soften when carrying out pubic hair removal. Apply plenty of shaving foam or gel over the area and leave for a few minutes to soften further. Ordinary soap is not suitable as it does not lock in the moisture to the hair the way a shaving preparation cream or gel does. Experiment with different brands if you find some cause skin irritation. They contain various chemicals and you need to find one that suits you. Pull the skin straight with your free hand and shave without applying pressure. Shave upwards against the direction of the hair growth. Make sure there is shaving foam on the skin each time you make a stroke with the razor. Shaving bare skin can cause razor burn and can be especially painful in pubic hair removal. Rinse the razor every couple of strokes as it will clog easily. Rinse off and see any areas that may have been missed and again apply gel to that area and shave. Massage unscented Vitamin E oil into the pubic area after shaving. To stop or reduce itching after shaving rub an ice cube over the area. Alternatively, rub a little baby oil into the pubic area. If you suffer from itchiness or blood spots, let the hair grow back for a week before shaving again. Keep the shaven area well moisturized between shaves by using a skin moisturizer or baby lotion. This will reduce the uncomfortable effect the stubble may cause between shaves. Recommendation: Apply Kalo Hair Inhibitor after each shaving session to significantly reduce hair growth. The hair that grows back becomes finer and softer making hair removal easier. 19 Reasons People Fail to Achieve Their Fitness Goals

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Brad Nelson Reason #1: You dont make a decision to start. You can have hundreds of excuses, but it comes down to how big is your want to? If you want results you have to start. Why wait til tomorrow what you can start today?? DECIDE! Reason #2: You dont know what you want. Where are you on a scale of 1-10, 10 being as serious as a heart attack, about reaching your fitness goals? If your number is anything but a 9 or a 10, I will not work with you. Why, because you are not COMMITTED to doing whatever it takes to reach your goals. If you say you are a 1-8 that means you get it right eighty percent or less of the time. That means that you will eat when and what you want and not stick to a program. That is like a rocket scientist at NASA being sixty percent sure the left engine works on the spaceship we are sending to the moon. COMMIT! Reason #3: You dont make it a priority. Everyones biggest excuse is TIME. My question to you is what do you value? Do you value your health? Do you value productive energy when spending time with your family and/or kids? I would say that you cannot afford not to make time. By making exercise a priority in your daily planner you will not only have a sense of accomplishment by sticking to a regular routine, but feel more energized and less stressed when dealing with the daily ebb and flow of life. SCHEDULE! Reason #4: You have no one hold you accountable. When beginning an exercise program, I highly recommend working out with a friend or considering a personal trainer because on the days you do not feel like going that person will encourage you to remember why youre doing this. Having a training partner also keeps your workouts fresh and fun. ACCOUNTABILITY! Reason #5: You focus more on the scale (weight) instead of the tape measure (inches). Muscle is more dense than fat. Therefore, focus on the inches. Some of the fittest people look like they way twenty pounds less than they actually do because muscle can be deceiving. Also, you will probably gain one or two pounds when you begin to exercise because strength training promotes this. If the only thing you did was add one pound of muscle, you will ultimately lose five pounds of body fat within six months because muscle burns calories (fat) at rest and fat does not. FOCUS ON INCHES! Reason #6: You start exercising but you dont change your eating habits. Eating and nutrition comprise about 70% of the results you will obtain when it comes to changing the shape of your body. What you eat and when you eat it are equally important. American culture in general would have you believing that this is a difficult concept when in reality it is not difficult at all. CHANGE EATING HABITS! Reason #7: You follow the newest, latest, greatest technique due to media hype. Almost everything you see on TV is a waste of your time, money, and effort. If it sounds too good to be trueit probably is. If a supermodel is advertising the product, you will NOT look like him or her by just using this product 8 minutes a day!!! DONT GET SUCKED INTO INFOMERCIALS! Reason #8: You quit right before you are going to see results. In order to see measurable results, you need to stick with your new found exercise routine for 90-120 days if you want to truly make LIFESTYLE changes and maintain your results for more than a couple of months. The human body completely regenerates itself about every 90-120 days. COMMIT TO A 90-DAY PLAN! Reason #9: You dont eat breakfast. Youve heard it since you were old enough to listen: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. In fact, a study done at the University of Massachusetts with 500 participants concluded startling statistics. You are 150% more likely to be obese by eating breakfast away from home, and you are an astonishing 450% more likely to be obese by not eating breakfast at all. Breakfast is a simple thing that can dramatically improve your fitness results and your lifestyle. EAT BREAKFAST! Reason #10: You dont drink water or you dont drink enough water. Water has many benefits. Your muscle tissue is about 75% water based. If you are dehydrated (and most people are), you will have more aches and pains than you really should have. When most people feel hungry, their body is usually telling them they are thirsty. Water also fights off hunger pains or will not allow you to eat as much food if you are drinking it diligently. DRINK WATER! Reason#11: You set your expectations too high. Lets face it, society places a major emphasis on results. However, what you just did to your body for the last 5, 10, maybe 20 years cant be corrected within 24 hours, a week or a month. Lifestyle changes take time to progress and become habits in your life. Be patient through the process and know that you are only going to have to go through the process once because you wont be on the latest roller-coaster diet. SET REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS! Reason #12: You dont switch your routine enough. Your body will hit a plateau because it will adapt to what you are doing. Therefore you will need to switch your routine around in order to continue to get the results you are looking for. This doesnt mean that you will always have to do MORE but rather work smarter so you are in control of your results. CHANGE UP YOUR ROUTINE! Reason #13: Youve read too many diet books and are misled on the topic of nutrition. Dieting is the most misused word when it comes to the world of exercise, fitness and health. With the United States leading the charge in the category of most unhealthy nation, we are bombarded with the latest do it in the next 24 hours fad diet that will help you lose 25 lbs in the next 2 days program. Dont overcomplicate what they would like you to think it really takes in order to change some habits. Using the word diet truly means what you are going to eat vs. what you are going to avoid. AVOID THE NEWEST DIET! Reason#14: You consume yourself with your program and you forget to have fun. Some of you get so wrapped in keeping an exercise journal, a food journal, and buying new workout clothes that you forget to be realistic about your approach to your new found self. Just remember that if you become too fanatical too quick you will more likely be on to the next best thing sooner than you think. You do not want your exercise routine to become a chore. HAVE FUN! Reason #15: You overcomplicate your routine. You have so many goals that you want to accomplish that you do too many things and spread yourself so thin that you dont see any concrete results. New found lifestyle habits are found through simple routinessomething that you can implement and stick to without too much deviation from your current flow of life. SIMPLIFY ROUTINE! Reason #16: You dont believe you can reach your ideal goals. Believe you can get there. Write out EXACTLY what you want and the keyWHEN you want it. Then break down your goals in weekly training goals and check them with a professional to see if they are realistic. You can get back to the shape you were in prior to kids, back as a high school athlete, or back as a high school cheerleader if you set your mind to it. Wherever the mind goes, the body will follow. BELIEVE! Reason #17: You dont seek guidance. Your new-found journey can be very intimidating. Set yourself up to win by talking to a professional that can help you set realistic goals but probably more importantly help you stay accountable. If you are not ready to be held accountable then you are probably not ready to truly go after your goals. SEEK PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE! Reason #18: You rely on some piece of equipment or a trainer to get you results. It is up to you and ONLY YOU to be responsible and accountable for achieving the results you are looking for. The equipment or trainers that help are there to guide, direct, and encourage you through the process. You are the only person who knows deep down if you are ready for this journey. ONLY YOU CAN ACHIEVE THE RESULTS YOU ARE LOOKING FOR! Reason #19: You dont do any strength training, just cardio. You will not get the results you are looking for if you leave out any components of a successful fitness plan. Strength training has many benefits including burning fat. If all you did was add ONE pound of lean muscle you would burn FIVE pounds of fat over the next 6 months without changing anything else. Strength training will also boost your immune system, strengthen bones, and increase your self-confidence. STRENGTH TRAINING IS THE TICKET! Natural (Controversial) Cures in Alternative Medicine

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Monty Henry …. and the second woman said “the side-effects seem to go on forever” as she read from the label of her “prescribed” medication. How often have you felt the same way? Hi my name is Carolyn and welcome to my blog site. What we’ll be discussing here are basically ideas, suggestions, testimonials and articles submitted by people just like you and me involving home remedies, alternative medicine and cures and ways to avoid over-emphasis on (the Western medical approach) medication. Some of the information is so controversial that the government (USA) really would rather not have them discussed at all. All that being said. Here’s some interesting information I found while researching hydrogen peroxide (enjoy): HYDROGEN PEROXIDE–CURSE OR CURE? ALTERNATIVES Newsletter Editor Dr. David G. Williams discusses the merits of intravenous administration and oral consumption of hydrogen peroxide therapy. When it comes to hydrogen peroxide therapy there seems to be only two points of view. Supporters consider it one of the greatest healing miracles of all time. Those opposed feel its ingestion is exceptionally dangerous, and only the foolhardy could think of engaging in such behavior. Before either condemning or endorsing hydrogen peroxide, let’s take a real close look at what we’re dealing with. If any substance is interesting, it’s hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide should really be called hydrogen dioxide. Its chemical formula is H2O2. It contains one more atom of oxygen that does water (H20) By now everyone’s aware of the ozone layer that surrounds the earth. Ozone consists of three atoms of oxygen (03). This protective layer of ozone is created when ultraviolet light from the sun splits an atmospheric oxygen molecule (02) into two single, unstable oxygen atoms. These single molecules combine with others to form ozone (03). Ozone isn’t very stable. In fact, it will quickly give up that extra atom of oxygen to falling rainwater to form hydrogen peroxide (H202). (Bear with me: all this chemistry mumbo jumbo I’m going through actually will help you understand the importance of hydrogen peroxide.) It is this hydrogen peroxide in rainwater that makes it so much more effective than tap water when given to plants. With the increased levels of atmospheric pollution, however, greater amounts of H202 react with air-borne toxins and never reach the ground. To compensate for this, many farmers have been increasing crop yields by spraying them with diluted hydrogen peroxide (5 to 16 ounces of 35% mixed with 20 gallons of water per acre). You can achieve the same beneficial effect with your house plants by adding 1 ounce of 3% hydrogen peroxide (or 16 drops of 35% solution) to every quart of water you give your plants. (It can also be made into an excellent safe insecticide. Simply spray your plants with 8 ounces of 3% peroxide mixed with 8 ounces of white sugar and one gallon of water.) Hydrogen peroxide is odorless and colorless, but not tasteless. When stored under the proper conditions, it is a very stable compound. When kept in the absence of light and contaminants, it dismutates (breaks down) very slowly at the rate of about 10% a year.(This can be slowed even further by storing the liquid in the freezer.) It boils at 152 degrees C and freezes at minus 2 degrees C.When exposed to other compounds hydrogen peroxide dismutates readily. The extra oxygen atom is released leaving H20 (water). In nature oxygen (02) consists of two atoms–a very stable combination. A single atom of oxygen, however, is very reactive and is referred to as a free radical. Over the past several years, we’ve continually read that these free radicals are responsible for all types of ailments and even premature aging. What many writers seem to forget, however, is that our bodies create and use free radicals to destroy harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi. In fact, the cells responsible for fighting infection and foreign invaders in the body (your white blood cells) make hydrogen peroxide and use it to oxidize any offending culprits. The intense bubbling you see when hydrogen peroxide comes in contact with a bacteria-laden cut or wound is the oxygen being released and bacteria being destroyed. The ability of our cells to produce hydrogen peroxide is essential for life. H202 is not some undesirable by-product or toxin, but instead a basic requirement for good health. Newer research indicates we need hydrogen peroxide for a multitude of other chemical reactions that take place throughout the body. For example, we now know that vitamin C helps fight infections by producing hydrogen peroxide, which in turn stimulates the production of prostaglandins. Also lactobacillus found in the colon and vagina produce hydrogen peroxide. This destroys harmful bacteria and viruses, preventing colon disease, vaginitis, bladder infections and a host of other common ailments. (Infect Dis News Aug.8,91:5).When lactobacillus in the colon or vaginal tract have been overrun with harmful viruses, yeast, or bacteria, an effective douche or enema solution can be made using 3 tablespoons of 3% H202 in 1 quart of distilled water. Keep in mind, however, that a good bacterial flora must always be re-established in theses areas to achieve lasting results. While we are discussing enemas and douches, there is another misconception about H202 I need to address. The friendly bacteria in the colon and vagina are aerobic. In other words, they flourish in high oxygen environments and thrive in the presence of oxygen rich H202. On the other hand, most strains of harmful bacteria (and cancer cells) are anaerobic and cannot survive in the presence of oxygen or H202. We can agree that hydrogen peroxide produced within individual body cells is essential for life. And no one doubts its effectiveness when it comes to treating infections topically. The controversy deals with ingesting the substance orally or introducing it into the body intravenously. The dispute has been going on for decades, and considering the attitude of our medical community, it will continue for many more decades to come. I’ll admit I was skeptical when I first learned about using H202 orally or intravenously. This healthy dose of skepticism, however, lead to a great deal of investigation, clinical work and experimentation. And while I realize a large majority of readers will probably never be convinced that H202 is a safe and effective compound, I am. Hydrogen peroxide is safe, readily available and dirt cheap. And best of all, it works! No one yet fully understands the complete workings of hydrogen peroxide. We do know that it is loaded with oxygen. (A pint of the food-grade 35% solution contains the equivalent of 130 pints of oxygen. Identifying Dirty Carpet In Restaurants

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Brian Ward A lesson for today in identifying that your favorite restaurant needs to clean their carpet. This is an easy one, first pick the restaurant that you would like to enjoy a meal. Second, arrive at the restaurant of your choice; this next step is the most important one. Third, when you open the door take a deep breath, what do you smell? If you do not smell food, I suggest you go to another restaurant. Now the reasons I said that, you should smell food, I think that is fare to say it is a restaurant. If you opened the door and smell smoke from cigarettes, maybe you should suggest they should install a smoke eater to filter the air you breathe. The most familiar reason is if you open the door and smell a funky smell, which could be they used a dirty mop to clean the floor. The most common problem is soured or mildewed carpet. This is the restaurant’s problem for the poor cleaning they receive, I have seen the managers trying to hide this problem they spray deodorizers around the restaurant. Some even put those little plug in deodorizers in the walls, just look around, be nosey at what you favorite place to dine is doing. I guess this is a plea for help for the professional carpet cleaners who invest time, money, training, into their business. These restaurants try to sacrifice your health to save money by using a cheaper cleaning company. Do not be embarrassed to tell them they have cleaning issues, remember you are PAYING THEM. The Lowdown on Finding an Online LPN Program

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Sara Reed What is an LPN? LPN stands for “licensed practical nurse”. This type of nurse usually works under the supervision of a registered nurse and can be responsible for a variety of caretaking tasks, including patient feeding, medical record updating, patient call answering, and vital sign monitoring. In some states, an LPN is allowed to administer intravenous medication as well. In California and Texas, an LPN is referred to as an LVN (licensed vocational nurse). On the nursing hierarchy, an LPN takes on more responsibility than a certified nurse assistant, but not quite as much as an RN. Becoming an LPN In order to become an LPN, one must hold his/her high school diploma or equivalent and then complete a two-year practical nursing program. Upon course completion, a candidate must pass the NCLEX-PN to become officially licensed as an LPN. LPNs can expect to earn approximately $16 per hour, which is the national average. Comparing Online LPN Programs There are many colleges that offer LPN training online, so that anyone can learn from home in his/her spare time without having to quit his/her job. Some things to consider when looking for an online LPN program include time flexibility, cost, prerequisites, and professor availability. Ask yourself first how much spare time you have to study in an online LPN program. You should be able to complete your training online without having to sacrifice your day job. Maybe you also have family to consider. Additionally, you should be sure to look at cost to make sure that enrolling isn’t going to put a huge dent in your budget. Also be sure to consider any prerequisites that a program may have. Most online LPN programs will require nothing more than a high school diploma, but it never hurts to double check this. Also consider your computer system requirements as well. Make sure you have a reliable Internet connection and a sturdy Word processing program and you should be good to go. Finally, it is usually helpful if you can get in touch with professors during the course of a class term. Some programs allow for more communication than others, so you will definitely want to consider this factor as well. To find out more about choosing an online LPN program, Sara Reed recommends Nursing Online Degree. What Is the Fat Burning Index Diet

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By Tanya Zilberter, PhD The Banta Diet is a flexible user-friendly ketogenic diet based on the fat burning capacity of foods having the proper combination of carb, fat, and protein. It is first of all a low carb diet. What does it mean for the dieters? Let’s look into the basics. Basic Facts about Carbs, Fat, and Protein-reduced Diets - Low-calorie diets burn both fat and muscle.- Low-fat diets prevent fat depositing but also fat burning.- Low-carb diets preserve muscle while burning the body’s fat for fuel. The Body’s Fuel What can the body use for fuel? Isn’t it the mixture of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, as we were taught in a middle school? Normally it is, but there are some peculiarities in using and storing every component of the mixture: Carbohydrates Carbohydrate fuel is the one being digested, stored and used, quickly and easily. This is why the body’s metabolic system always prefers to deal with this fuel. When taken in excess, carbs are first stored in the liver and muscles. These stores are very limited in their ability to carry glycogen as a stored fuel. There’s only as much energy stores in these depots as to survive a day, approximately 750 Kcal. After the carb depots are filled, all excess carbs are transformed into fat and stored in the fat depots. Fat stores in the body are huge compared to carb stores. Even in a person with a normal percentage of body fat, fat tissue contains enough calories to survive months of starvation. Obese people carry up to a year’s supply of fat fuel. Proteins As I stated earlier, carbohydrate is the preferred fuel for all organs of the body. The heart, however, is less discriminate and readily uses any fuel, but only if carbs are present in sufficient quantities. When there’s not enough carbs coming in with food, the body manages to produce its own carbohydrates out of protein that it takes either from food or from muscle tissue. This is why calorie-restricted diets burn not only fat but also muscle. To prevent this undesirable condition, low-fat and calorie-restricted diets should include sufficient carb and protein, and low-carb diets should include sufficient fat and protein. Here we come to the very core of low-carb versus high-carb dieting: High-carb diet proponents argue that carbohydrates preserve muscle protein and prevent fat deposition. Is this true?Yes. But this is not the complete truth. While low-fat diets prevent further depositing of fat, they also prevent the existent adipose tissue from being used for fuel. They preserve muscle but they preserve fat as well. High-carb diets preserve fat simply because the body prefers to use carbs for fuel and when there are plenty of carbs, there’s just no need to burn body’s fat. Carbs and Fats The combination of a high-carb diet, unlimited calorie intake and physical inactivity causes the excess calories from carbs to be converted into fat and immediately be deposited. Thus, many high-carb diets incorporate calorie limitation and appetite-curbing methods, from appetite suppressants to behavioral modification. So What is a Low-carb Diet? A low-carbohydrate (low-carb) diet is a diet that allows less than 100 grams of carbohydrates in a daily ration. Some low-carb diets are very restrictive, not only in carbohydrate amount but also in the amount of protein. Carbohydrate allowance in different low-carb diets varies between 20 grams (or less) to 100 grams. Some diets claim that they are low-carb while allowing more than 100 grams of carbohydrate per day, but these are really carbohydrate-reduced diets and they work differently. What does someone on a low-carb diet eat? Most low-carb diets allow meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, butter, oils and nuts. Green vegetables are allowed, but it is advised to count carbohydrate content in them. Some diary products other than milk are also allowed in limited quantities. Fat-free products, fruits, grains, legumes and starches are not allowed. Why do low-carb diets work? It is believed that low-carb diets work because when there’s not enough carbohydrate fuel, the body adjusts to using fat for fuel. It is important that while burning the body’s fat, low-carb diet preserves muscles because it provides sufficient amounts of protein. Are low-carb diets dangerous? Many nutritionists warn that these diets can be dangerous, but there is no clinical evidence against them. The Durham V.A. Medical Center in North Carolina conducted a clinically controlled study of one of the low-carb diets (Atkins). The results concluded that the diet is safe. How does it compare to other diets? There are three general diet groups on the market: - low-calorie;- low-fat; and- low-carb. Any one of them may be good for one person, but worthless or bad for another. Low-fat diets appear to be successful as a long-term regimen for physically active individuals, for those with few extra pounds to lose and those mostly concerned about maintaining a healthy weight. There was a trend of using low-fat diets to improve blood cholesterol and decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases, but recent clinical data questioned this approach. Low-calorie diets require self-discipline and, in many cases, support and guidance. One example is the Weight Watchers weight-loss program that has attracted millions of dieters over decades. Why are low-carb diets used to be popular? A part of their popularity can be explained by the fact that low-carb diets curb appetite, so it is easy to stay on the diet and even make it a lifestyle. The negative side of these diets is that they can not be considered balanced. Dieters are usually advised to take supplements to ensure an adequate nutrient intake. It’s very important to understand how these diets work and what you can expect from each of them; and to be able to then choose a diet that is best for you.Fortunately, the mechanisms of carbohydrates working as primary fuel for just about any body have been studied extensively and are well understood. What is the Ketogenic Diet? The Ketogenic Diet consists of high-fat, low-protein and low-carbohydrate intake. It is a stringent, mathematically calculated diet high in fat, and low in protein and carbohydrates that, when followed conscientiously, produces a by-product called ketones. The diet has been in existence since the 1920s, when it has been considered a breakthrough in treatment of intractable childhood epilepsy but was usurped by synthetic medications in the 1950s. “The reintroduction of the Ketogenic diet is a great opportunity for registered dieticians to play a pivotal role in offering hope in previously hopeless cases.” (Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 1996, Vol 96, No11, 1134-1135) The diet can be used as a treatment for diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension, hyperlipoproteinism, autism, obesity, epilepsy and other serious medical conditions, including disappearance of gallbladder stones (Journal of Pediatrics, 117(5):743-5, 1990 Nov.) and morbid obesity (Therapeutische Umschau, 46(5):297-308, 1989 May.) The Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins have set up a way to induce the effects of starvation by feeding the patient large quantities of fat and limiting protein and carbohydrates. Dr. Raymond Chang, a Scottish Rite neurologist, says the diet is “a controlled fast.” Tanya Zilberter, PhD, is a researcher, health educator, exercise physiologist, and scientific journalist. Vitamins and Nutritions for Your Family

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Liza Othman Nearly 20 vitamins that are known or believed to be important to human well-being have thus far been discovered. A few more vitamins are known to be important to such creatures as fish, chickens, or insects, but not to people. When you eat a variety of food you are pretty sure of getting a well-rounded assortment of the vitamins you needexcept perhaps vitamin D. And you may also be getting other vitamins still undetected in food, but serving you just the same. Separate doses of one or more selected vitamins are best taken under doctors’ orders. For research is showing more and more instances in which a vitamin or other nutrient seeks a different nutrient in a meal as a special partner to assist in its work. When a vitamin pill brings in a mass army, the right partners may not be ready to use so much specialized help. The following vitamins are of practical importance in planning family meals. Vitamin A Vitamin A is important to the young for growth. And at all ages it is important for normal vision, especially in dim light. In one way or another, many vitamins help protect the body against infection, and vitamin A’s guard duty is to help keep the skin and the linings of nose, mouth, and inner organs in good condition. If these surfaces are weakened, bacteria can invade more easily. You can get vitamin A from some animal foods. Good sources are liver, egg yolks, butter, whole milk and cream, and cheese made from whole milk or cream. Fish-liver oils which children take for vitamin D are rich in vitamin A besides. From many vegetable foods you can get carotenes, which are yellow-orange substances that the body converts into vitamin A. Green, yellow, and some red vegetables are good sources of carotene. One good reason for including a vegetable from the “leafy, green, and yellow group” every day is to keep stocked with this vitamin. Margarine, a vegetable fat, is nearly always fortified with vitamin A or carotene. Some vitamin A can be stored in the body. So it is to your advantage to eat heartily of foods that provide for it, such as the green and yellow vegetables. A savings account of vitamin A in your system may be drawn upon, if in any emergency this vitamin is wanting in the diet. The B-vitamin family There was once supposed to be just one vitamin B. Then, vitamin B was found to be complex and it has in time been separated into about a dozen vitamins, each with particular duties and importance. Most of them are now called by names that tell something about their chemical nature. Thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin are the most generally known and best understood B’s. Getting enough of these in food helps with steady nerves, normal appetite, good digestion, good morale, healthy skin. When these B’s are seriously wanting in diet, malnutrition ills such as beriberi and pellagra follow. But far more common in this country are borderline cases. The chronic grouch, the lazybones, the nervous man, the housewife with vague complaints, may be showing effects of food providing too little of these important B’s. Recently identified B’s are folic acid and vitamin B12, both important for healthy state of the blood. Folic acid and B12 are being used medically with success in treating two hard- to-cure diseasespernicious anemia and sprue. Few foods contain real wealth of B vitamins, but in a varied diet many foods contribute some and so build an adequate supply. One way to make sure of raising your B level is to use regularly bread and flour that have been made from whole grain or that have been enriched so as to restore important B vitamins. Getting ample milk in diet is important for B’s, too, and for riboflavin in particular. B vitamins play a part in converting fuel in foods into energy. It follows that any one who eats large quantities of starches and sugars also requires more food containing B vitamins.
